Perrin Black Oil Catch Can

Perrin Black Oil Catch Can

This is not needed for power upgrades or anything that has to do with performance
however it gives a owner a peace in mind knowing that additional oil gunk
from engine is being "catched" to keep it from being stored in the engine itself.

I will post up my engine bay after I am done with all the upgrades.

GSC Power Division S1 Cams

GSC Power Division S1 Cams

The S1 camshafts is used in cars with upgraded single turbo larger than 57mm.
The S1 camshaft will be installed later on the JSR X however for now
I purchased it for future installation.

GSC Power Division S1 Cams

Some specification...

These cams will not have bottom end losses over stock cams; nothing but gains and will promote an extremely flat torque curve. Gains of 40-70whp (depending on Turbo) have been seen by simply bolting the S1 cams in and reshimming. Designed for a rev range of 3500-8000rpms, these cams require a single valve spring upgrade over stock. 450-800whp camshaft set with an idle slightly rougher than stock.

Additional Tune Ups needed for my Turbo Kit.
Since I am looking for around 400WHP on my Evo X
the 1000 Injector Dynamics was a good choice to go with.

JSR X - 1000 Injector Dynamics

Nothing too complicated... need more power? need more speed? Bigger Turbo!
Well... to be honest.. there is more to it than just changing your turbo but
with additional tune ups I went with the Garrett GTX3071R Bolt-on Turbo Kit.

On my JSR X - Garrett GTX3071R

Bearing TypeBall
Cooling SystemOil & Water Cooled

Actuator CompeteNA
Other SpecificationsForged, fully-machined compressor wheel featuring next generation aerodynamics Ported shroud compressor housing to increase surge resistance Outline interchangeable with GT3071R Sold as a CHRA & compressor housing; turbine housing options are available

This turbo kit can handle up to340 - 560 HP with
Displacement : 1.80L - 3.00L

I am happy with this setup and I will upload my dyno sheet later on

JSR X Suspension - Stance GR+

Stance GR+

My New Suspension - Stance GR+ Coilovers w/

Probably the second most important part in AutoX... the suspension.
Actually... I would definitely put it first or second if tires are not included.

There are many other suspensions you can get for your car. Stance being a popular one.
Here are some features of the Stance GR+

  • Adjustment Knob15-Way Damping Adjustable
  • Upper Pillowball Bearing Adjustable Camber Uppermount
  • Upper Pillowball Bearing Pillowball Uppermount
  • Spring Cold Wound Linear Spring
  • Monotube Inverted Monotube Shocks
  • Dustboot Dustboot
  • Collar Aluminum Collars & Upper Mounts
  • Bracket Height Adjustable Lower Bracket
  • Tender Spring Helper Spring

The JSR X will not be using the standard Stance GR+ springs but swift springs upgrade with ratio of 11 & 9. This just makes the ride more stiffer than the standard Stance GR+ springs.

Here is also a graph of what Stance GR+ does...

Ricer to Racer

My History - From 350z to Evo X to JSR X

At Last!! My Evo X is finally tuning up to JSR X!
It's in a shop in chicago called Touge Factory and I gotta say...
these guys don't mess around!

Like many guys out there, I too walked the path of a "ricer" before I started AutoX..
Getting influenced from movies like fast and furious and Initial D..

Fast and Furious

Initial D

..my frist car which was a Nissan 350z was all about the looks but inside was all stock.

My First Car & Motorcycle - Suzuki GS500 & Nissan 350Z

My First Car & Motorcycle - Suzuki GS500 & Nissan

Did I like the look on my 350Z?.... well, to be honest, yes I did. I had underlights with
subwoofers and speakers on the back for my beats.

This lasted for about a year until I got introduced to a motorsport called AutoX (Look at my past post for more information on Autocross a.k.a AutoX)

My 350Z couldn't handle the intense course that was made in Rantoul Airport
and it spun out so bad that you could literally see a huge piece of my tire chunk
flying across the course.

Of course I was not that good of a AutoX driver back then but when a veteran who has been
AutoXing for nearly 10 year drove the car he was very disappointed at my car.

Is a 350Z a bad car? Hell No! It's an awesome car! Just that my car sucked real bad due to
it's past... which I will not talk about it...

Anywayz, so I sold my 350Z and got another car.. the one I have right now. An Evo X.
It was a sweet deal I got from a guy who lived outside chicago, who didn't know the value of the car!

I've had my Evo X for about a year and a half and it's not a car... it's a freaking MACHINE!
In the streets it's a nice car but it truely shines when it's pushed to do what it's made to do.
To Race!

Next blog I will post what mods I've done to the car and a dyno sheet from AMS!

Upgrades on Evo X, Turbo, Heads, Cams, Tires, Suspension and lots of kits.

Before Shipping My Evo X to Korea - Fixes and Upgrades

So... as my time in the states is coming to an end, I am REALLY excited to go back to Korea!
Since I will also be shipping my Evo X to Korea, I've decided to do some major upgrades
so when I get there I don't have to worry about it.

It's been in my mind for a while now and I have finally decided on what I am going to do to my Evo X.

I usually daily drive my car and I also auto-x with it couple times.
Autocross (aka. auto-x) is a growing sport in the states where people
race against time in a course laid out with traffic cones.
Here is an example of what an autocross is...

Kentucky  Autocross
Sited from Youtube : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lc_aKcrbiaE&feature=player_detailpage

It's a great motorsport and it's increasing greatly in the states,
but for now lets leave it there and in the close future I will post in detail
about what is autocross and it's specifications.

Going back to my upgrades on my Evo X..
I will not go into details on everything now but here is a list of what's to come.

Engine Bay
APR Head Studs
1000cc Injector Dynamics
Walbro 225lph Fuel Pump
AMS Widemouth Downpipe
Garett GT-X Turbo
AMS FMIC
GSC S1 Cams
Perrin Oil Catch Can

Suspension
Whiteline Rear Swaybar
Stance Plus Pro
AMS Brake Cooling Kit

Tires
Blizzak LM-60

There is more to come but this is whats definitely going on.
I will update my upgrades in due time!

Purdue Autocross Club Red Camber Meet & Drive Course Video

Purdue Autocross Club Red Camber Meet & Drive Course Video

So... Red Camber is a club that I founded when I was in Purdue University around 2010.
It was a nice cool club where we got together and went to compete in autocross around Indiana & Illinois.
Even though Purdue University wouldn't let us do autocross because of "safety issues"
we still did fun things during summer and winter.

Here is a picture of some of the cars in our club.

PURDUE AUTOCROSS CLUB RED CAMBER MEET

It was a rainy day but we had a good turnout that day.
Around 6 Civic Si came and cars from AWD Subaru Impreza STi
to RWD Mazda MX-5 came.
The one with the headlights on in the middle is the one and only!
Me and my Evo X!

Anyways... after the meet we went to get some stuff to eat and took some more pictures
in front of the lot.

6 CIVIC SI's IN THE LOT

The guys in club knows how much I make fun of the Si's since I have the Evo
but to be fairly honest... I have huge respect for the Si's.. especially the VTEC.
When that VTEC kicks in around 6000 rpm.. it's actually really nice!
The torque difference can be felt and the pull is actually aggressive!
So.. I am just playing with you guys. I respect the Honda Civic Si's.

Here is a sample of our Red Camber course video that me and Chris took quite a while ago.
It's not great but around Purdue University... there is barely no place to drive so this was actually
something for us to cherish.
Hope you enjoy the video of My Evo X and Chris's Si.

Florida Key West 7 Mile Bridge & Smoky Mountain

Florida Key West 7 Mile Bridge & Smoky Mountain

During my final thanksgiving at Purdue, Shoko (my lovely girlfriend), Min and I
decided to go to Florida Key West for a drive!
Yeah.. almost a 3000 mile drive give or take couple hundred.

Driving there was not so bad... a little noisy perhaps due to my exhaust being too loud
and in the beginning the endless famous corn field view didn't help with
falling asleep in the driving seat.

DAY 1

Not my picture but you get the point lol.. I feel like this all the time in Indiana

Our first stop was at a restaurant in Tennessee called Loveless Cafe.
They had one of the best American Home-cooked meal.
Their fried chicken and pulled pork was excellent!
However, the best was Banana Pudding Dessert! Definitely a MUST!

Pulled Pork & Famous Corn Bread

After stuffing ourselves with some good home cooking, we continued our way towards Florida.
In our first day, we travelled 839.9km and took a break at Chattanooga.

Day 1 - West Lafayette to Chattanooga

DAY 2

Now it was time to reach our destination! Florida Key West!
We travelled 1267.7 km from Chattanooga to Florida Key West..
I almost broke my back doing so... don't get me wrong, those Recaro seats are comfortable but
traveling over 1000km puts a lot of stress on your back..

Recaro Seats on EVO X

We drove close to the start of 7 Mile Long Bridge and this is the layout from Trip Journal

Day 2 - Chattanooga to Miami

DAY 3

All the back breaking driving down to Miami was paid off when we went off to drive the
7 Mile Long Bridge in Key West.

Here is a little video of what my girlfriend took while we were driving across the bridge.
Hope you enjoy.

Driving 7 Mile Bridge (BGM - SPONGEBOB)

Having the ocean right next to you while you are driving is one of the BEST feeling!!
Speed Limit is 55mph all the way to Key West but my adrenaline was forcing me to push my Evo X.
In the end... I overtook couple cars and was satisfied.

While traveling the awesome scenery we stopped at Seafood Buffet at Whale Harbor.
During dinner time you can eat all you can eat Alaskan Crab Legs and shrimps.
However, comparing the price ($30 per person) with the quality of the food, I was not satisfied at all
due to the poor selection of sushi and the size of the alaskan crab legs...
they had barely no meat in them at all...

After dinner, we kept traveling and took some pictures of my Evo X with scenery.
Evo X - 7 Mile Bridge Key West

Evo X - Knights Key

From Miami to Key West we travelled 420.6km on day 3.
If you have never been here... you HAVE TO GO!!
Driving here is the BEST FEELING EVER!

Day 3 - Miami to Key West

DAY 4 & 5

After an awesome day at Key West it was time for us to go back to mundane university life at Indiana
so we packed our stuff and started our way back home.
However, my girlfriend wanted to introduce me to a place called
"Tail of the Dragon" in Smoky Mountains.

Tail of the Dragon - North Carolina & Tennessee

This place is a legend to those who love mountain side driving!
Before you even start with the tail of the dragon, just getting there was intense enough for all of us.
Around 100 miles of turns before the tail of the dragon made us really tired since most of the roads
getting there looked like this...............

Little slice of curve heaven!

Min who was sitting behind the car took a shot of us when we were taking a turn
and as you can see... our mighty mouse figure was getting effected by the intense g.

We really enjoyed the whole trip since it was focused mostly on driving.
If you love driving, I strongly recommend this trip route for experiencing both the ocean and the mountain side of traveling. You will LOVE IT!

Day 4 - Miami to South Carolina

Day 5 - South Carolina to West Lafayette

Some extra cool pictures taken during the trip!

Busted Miata to Racing Miata (Restoration)

Busted Miata to Racing Miata (Restoration)

First time I got this baby was around 2009 fall...
I was looking for a 2nd vehicle besides my Evo X to autocross with and I found her on craiglist.
Her right fender was completely torn apart and the right door had a huge dent in it.
It was obvious that she had an accident... a bad one too.

I went down to see the car and from the first look... I was not pleased.
It was worse then the picture and I was having second thoughts about buying the car.
But the moment I heard the car start... it purred like a kitten and when the gas was pushed... it was mean!
I REALLY liked it so I decided to purchase her.

She basically looked like this in the beginning..

Not Original Picture but very very close to mine

I was what you called a "noob" in the whole automobile world and to be honest I didn't know much about fixing cars let alone changing engine oil. I knew how to drive the car but mechanically...
lets just say CarX was right next to my house.

Around this time I made an autocross club in Purdue University called "Red Camber" and I decided to have the miata fixed by a club member who said he knew how to fix cars and had friends who could help

I paid around $800 and what I received from him was satisfactory...

Side Rear taped with Hood Scoop

Original Interior

Same spot left rear under door taped

Hood taped with carbon fiber vinyl

It was an ok job however for $800 some of my other members thought it was a crappy job
So feeling disappointed, I decided to learn it myself and fix the car as she deserves.

First I sanded her down for a different paint look.

First time sanding a car

Preparation for the miata took around 2 months because I never
sanded a car before and it was not an easy task.
However, after she was done, me and Chris (club member) decided to switch her suspension.
We went with the flying' miata stage 2 suspension.

Just before switching the suspension

Then the paint job came. Never painted anything in my whole life.. this was probably the biggest task
The steps I took involved after sanding was...

Clean Car -> Tape -> 1st Coat Prime -> 2nd light Coat Prime -> 3rd lighter coat prime ->
1st Paint ->2nd Paint ->Water Fine Sand ->3rd lighter Paint
->1st Clear Coat ->2nd Lighter Clear Coat -> Dry -> Wash

Did this work? Well... to be honest it was not bad at all!
The car came out pretty nice looking and I was satisfied.
Here is a picture of what she looked like after we finished everything.

Finished Restoration

I was really happy with how it looked like in the end... but due to me moving back to Korea I had to sell it
Next picture is me and Chris at Walesboro Autocross competing at SCCA (Sports Car Club of America)

Walesboro Airport, IN - SCCA Autocross

And finally the Miata at the start line!!!!!

Walesboro Airport IN, SCCA Autocross

We did really well and she ran hard and fast! I will never forget how much fun
the miata was and will definitely get another one when I go to Korea.
